Your guide to a getaway at Bondi Beach, Australia

By Dan Koday, Jul 2020

Bondi Beach, Australia is a true beach neighborhood gem

Iconic. Mesmerizing. Breathtaking. These are just some of the words travelers use to describe Bondi Beach, Australia. It's each of those things, but at its core, the beautiful beach suburb is the heart of what's hip and trendy in Australia. We locked in on the best street to shop (and which stores to duck into), where to grab a bite, how to experience Bondi's coastline art and where to end your night with a delicious cocktail.

What to do

First thing's first: Though Bondi Beach is much more than a beach, you'll want to take a timeout on its magnificent crescent-shaped stretch of golden white sand (which is great for epic, one-of-a-kind beachfront photos). The beach is also a bucket-list destination for people looking to catch a wave; meet up with the pro instructors at Let's Go Surfing, Bondi's only officially licensed surfing school, for small-group or private lessons.

Swim in a pool surrounded by the Pacific's crashing waves at Icebergs on Bondi Beach, Australia.

The Bondi Icebergs Club is one of Australia's most photographed spots: the swimming club and bistro is partially submerged in the Pacific Ocean, and waves often crash up onto its side for dramatic effect. The club not only has a super cool name, but it also has a pool (which is open to guests) that you'll dream about for a long time to come. And there's an on-site spa and sauna for when you need some rest and relaxation

Shopping in Bondi centers on Gould Street, where you'll find local designer outposts and cute boutiques. Check out men's clothing at ANNEX, and stop by swimwear favorite Orlebar Brown.

The beach-adjacent artwork at Bondi Beach Graffiti Wall puts street art on full public display; street artists from around the world have put their stamp on this functional sea wall, and it's become an emblem of the community. There is also a variety of art galleries within a short walk or drive; check out the digital animal prints at ATTY, the aboriginal art at Cooee or the studio gallery of Australian artist Brett Whiteley.

Where to eat and drink

Porch & Parlour is a favorite for brunch or a quick coffee stop, and its hipster vibe and clientele are hard not to embrace. Large open windows maximize the neighborhood's warm weather in summer months and open up to a lovely view. Inside, the cafe is packed with charming touches, including scraped and scratched walls and florals and greenery adorning the tiled coffee bar. And did we mention that the food is fresh, healthy and crazy delicious? Australians know how to elevate breakfast, and Porch & Parlour one-ups that with plates that combine eggs with a smorgasbord of goodies, such as labneh, a green pea pancake or mushroom gnocchi.

An oldie but a goodie, Brown Sugar serves brunch all day, which can be perfect if you've had a little too much fun during a night out in Bondi. The welcoming space with exposed brick walls has cocktails and a genius plating presentation, and its fine fare is creative, seasonal and influenced by the flavors of the Mediterranean.

Totti is reminiscent of an Italian taverna, and its charm is matched only by its international wine list and sophisticated cocktail and aperitif roster. Dishes include pickled mussels, corn fregola, a catch of the day and hard-to-resist desserts, such as a Neapolitan ice cream sandwich and panna cotta and cherries. For drinks, check out the hidden bar at the Baxter Inn, considered one of the area's finest watering holes; it stars a vast selection of whiskeys. Celebrating a special occasion? Try Seans, Bondi's salty jewel, which constantly rotates its farm-to-table menu and boasts gorgeous ocean views.

While you could hang out all day on the sand, be sure to explore everything else that Bondi Beach, Australia, has to offer. Its unique art, boutique shops and lively restaurant scene will have you coming back for more time and again.
